This was how an immortal contest should end.
Two tennis hardheads slumped in their chairs, faces vacant of expression, because there was nothing left to give. After five sets, nearly five hours of play. After more peaks and valleys than the continent of Asia. After rain delays, because even Mother Nature apparently needed a break when Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal met.
This was how a classic match should be.
One special moment after another after another, from midday to an English summer dusk.
One of the men finally won, because one of them finally had to.
But how could they squeeze all that drama into such a small grassy space?
With grace and honor and the knowledge no effort had been left undone in the defense of what had been his. "I tried everything," Federer told the crowd at the All England Club when it was finally over Sunday, holding up the award for second place, probably feeling like a lion holding up a stalk of celery.
This is how a prodigy should herald a changing of the guard.
Face down on the court, awed by the wonder of what he had just done. Nadal talked of a fulfilled dream, and has any athlete, anywhere, worked harder at the moment of truth to earn the right?
No.
