Johann Sebastian Bach: Es ist genung, aus: O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort, BWV 60
After a difficult period in his life, Max Reger planned to write a Latin requiem in March 1914. Shaken by the horrific images of the front, he started composing the gigantic work shortly after the outbreak of war. But he laid his pen aside as he was writing the Dies irae – perhaps sensing that the gigantic nature of the work would stand in the way of performance in the foreseeable future. Another explanation could be that his friend, organist of St. Thomas’ Karl Straube, advised him against completing it. Only in 1938, shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, was the unfinished requiem mass performed, conducted by Reger’s pupil, Max Stein. Our performance closes with Bach’s death chorale »Es ist genung; Herr, wenn es dir gefällt«. (AG)
