Clifford Kubiak, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of California San Diego, has posted an apology for an offensive term that was used on his laboratory’s website.; |# s$ k! R0 p: B. a

In a list of “lab rules,” apparently meant to be humorous, there was the phrase: “Don’t believe anything the Chinaman says.” % g4 w; }( }, T/ K : t4 E; M6 Y6 M$ A! a# SThe existence of the web page was disclosed on an Internet forum for Chinese speaking academics. ( G% I; W& B8 u+ N4 g/ m, m( E5 N0 u4 `" m0 L9 S* y! u9 V+ L2 |( V
University officials took the site down as soon as they learned of it and issued an apology late Monday. . f% l9 e. b2 ?$ O- p$ _ ; [9 L8 Z$ L2 _Kubiak’s message, posted on his lab website, reads:; c+ v4 E" Q! ], z/ l% }

I find the language offensive and I am embarrassed by the poor judgment exhibited in posting the offending language. I have taken steps to remove the offending language and will arrange for appropriate training for my research group and me relative to the UCSD Principles of Community.”
