请教大家关于美国入境的时间问题

因为要去美国做交换三个月，拿到J1类型的签证，可在美国停留的时间是五月一号到八月底，然后订了五月二号的机票去，可是美国那边的老板却告诉我，我必须在五月一号之前入境，是这样的吗？
签证上是这样写的："J-/F-/M-Visa holders must present their DS-2019/I-20 upon arrival. Entry ist permitted up to 30 days before the start of the program. J-Visa holders may remain in the U.S. up to 30 days after the program end date"这不是说只是允许提前入境，可是不一定是必须提前入境吧？希望知道的朋友们告知一下，感谢啊！
