小查利原本生活在一个幸福的家庭，除了溺爱他的父母，家中还有14岁的哥哥丹尼尔和6岁的弟弟哈里。对于儿子翘课、抽烟、酗酒，查利的父亲、35岁的马丁•米切尔从来不闻不问。去年11月，小查利终因「不服管教」被所在中学扫地出门。可是他的父母却将自己的责任推得一干二净，表示他们的家教没有问题，否则家中其余2个儿子为何没有变坏。在母亲琳达看来，小查利的「行为出轨」全因同校几个年长的坏孩子，自家的「好儿子」正是在后者的教唆下才变坏的。
