Abstract: Shielding propertiesof single-phase dense bulk superconducting ceramics of YBa2Cu3O7-xagainst the gravitational force were studied at temperatures below 77K. A small non-conducting and non-magnetic sample weighing 5.48 g wasplaced over a levitating superconducting disk and the loss of weightwas measured with high precision using an electro-optical balancesystem. The sample was found to lose from 0.05 to 0.3% of its weight, depending on the rotation speed of the superconducting disk. Partialloss of weight might be the result of a certain state of energy whichexists inside the crystal structure of the superconductor at lowtemperatures. The unusual state of energy might have changed a regularinteraction between electromagnetic, nuclear and gravitational forcesinside a solid body and is responsible for the gravity shielding effect.

Abstract: In1996, NASA established the Breakthrough Propulsion Physics program toseek the ultimate breakthroughs in space transportation: propulsionthat requires no propellant mass, propulsion that attains the maximumtransit speeds physically possible, and breakthrough methods of energyproduction to power such devices. Topics of interest includeexperiments and theories regarding the coupling of gravity andelectromagnetism, vacuum fluctuation energy, warp drives and wormholes, and superluminal quantum effects. Because these propulsion goals arepresumably far from fruition, a special emphasis is to identifyaffordable, near-term, and credible research that could make measurableprogress toward these propulsion goals. The methods of the program andthe results of the 1997 workshop are presented. This BreakthroughPropulsion Physics program, managed by Lewis Research Center, is onepart of a comprehensive, long range Advanced Space Transportation Planmanaged by Marshall Space Flight Center.
